Upstage is a musical theatre group offering training for children aged 5 to 18. Each child is encouraged to develop at their own pace and is always supported and encouraged. I know that every child is unique and build this into their performance, showcasing their strengths.
We work together as a team and form strong bonds throughout our lessons, which means their confidence grows and blossoms.
We focus on singing, dancing and acting, which, as well as being fun, use a lot of transferable skills. I have found the children learn a lot about working together as a team, as well as the technical skills needed for all disciplines.
Each year we have two main performance opportunities. We work on a showcase in the winter, and a musical in the summer. For the showcase, we have solo songs, monologues, group musical numbers, short scenes and a big group number. Every child is given the opportunity to perform, and all work on solo songs and monologues for exams if they wish to take them. This really helps to build confidence and normalise performing to their peers.
We work on a musical for the summer performance. This is operated as professionally as we can, with auditions being held at the beginning and all of the children are welcome to try for any part. We learn the big group numbers, work on solos and scenes before linking it all together. We use lesson time to make costumes, and sets, if there is any spare, so the children get a real feel for all aspects of putting on a show.
We offer LAMDA exams in Acting and LCM exams in Musical Theatre (singing). All children work on a solo song and solo monologue to prepare them for an exam but they are optional.
Once they have mastered their pieces and are ready to take an exam, I will discuss full costs with the parents/guardians. If they feel taking an exam is not for them, a class exam is an option, where they will still progress to the next level.
If they wish to take the exams, they can often be booked in Exeter. Or, since Covid, they can be be done online, which allows us to use our studio space.
